FNB operated a substantial portfolio of Adabas and Natural legacy applications powering core banking functions. These systems were critical but increasingly isolated from modern web services, API ecosystems, and downstream enterprise applications. The risk of disruption was high; the need to integrate was urgent.
What We Delivered
mWtech provided deep-level support and optimisation of existing Adabas/Natural environments while simultaneously engineering web enablement layers. We built robust integration bridges using webMethods and Java EE. These connected legacy banking logic to modern front-ends and enterprise service buses without interrupting live operations.
Impact
Core banking functions remained stable and fully operational throughout. FNB gained modern API access to legacy data assets, enabling faster digital product delivery, reduced mainframe dependency risk, and a roadmap toward full cloud-era integration.
>Challenge
South Africa's largest short-term insurer ran a heterogeneous environment spanning IBM z/OS mainframe, IBM iSeries (AS/400), and Windows servers. RPC services bridging these platforms were fragile, poorly optimised, and becoming a bottleneck for claims processing and policy management workflows at scale.
What We Delivered
We redesigned and optimised RPC service layers across all three platforms, implementing Software AG EntireX for reliable, performant remote procedure calls. webMethods was deployed as the integration backbone, with dedicated DevOps support ensuring environment stability, continuous deployment, and incident response across z/OS, iSeries, and Windows simultaneously.
Impact
Santam achieved a stabilised, high-throughput integration environment capable of supporting peak insurance processing loads. RPC latency reduced significantly, environment reliability improved measurably, and the team gained structured DevOps practices for ongoing platform management.
Challenge
One of Africa's largest banking groups faced a defining question. How could it modernise a deeply entrenched COBOL, Natural, and Adabas legacy estate without triggering catastrophic risk to live financial services? The challenge was not just technical — it was strategic, architectural, and organisational.
What We Delivered
mWtech served as a trusted advisor to Standard Bank's architecture and integration leadership teams. We conducted in-depth assessments of the legacy estate, provided authoritative guidance on modernisation pathways, and co-designed transition roadmaps that balanced innovation pace with operational continuity and regulatory compliance.
Impact
Standard Bank gained a clear, risk-calibrated modernisation strategy grounded in deep platform expertise. Decisions made during this engagement informed multi-year investment planning, prevented costly missteps, and positioned the bank to confidently begin incremental legacy transformation.
Challenge
South Africa's State Information Technology Agency manages the IT infrastructure for multiple government departments. SITA's Adabas and Natural application portfolio needed to interoperate with newer web enterprise applications and Microsoft .NET-based systems — with zero tolerance for data loss or service interruption given the public-service mandate.
What We Delivered
We designed and implemented a full-stack integration architecture connecting Adabas/Natural applications to enterprise web services using IBM WebSphere MQ as the messaging backbone, routed through webMethods on a Windows/.NET infrastructure. This included full architecture documentation, environment setup, and ongoing DevOps support for the hybrid stack.
Impact
SITA's critical government applications gained reliable, asynchronous integration with enterprise systems — ensuring continuity of public-sector services while enabling future-ready interoperability. The WebSphere MQ backbone provided guaranteed message delivery critical for government data workflows.
Challenge
Africa's largest mutual assurance society and funeral services provider operates with deep legacy application roots. As its digital ecosystem expanded — with external partners, third-party APIs, and mobile channels — the disconnect between legacy systems and external service endpoints became a critical operational liability.
What We Delivered
mWtech designed and implemented a webMethods-based integration platform that exposed AVBOB's legacy application data and functions as consumable APIs. We set up and maintained the webMethods environment from infrastructure level through to service deployment, providing DevOps services to ensure reliability, version control, and continuous delivery.
Impact
AVBOB's legacy systems became first-class participants in its digital API ecosystem — enabling seamless data exchange with external partners, supporting mobile experiences, and dramatically reducing integration lead times for new digital initiatives across its nationwide network.
Challenge
Europcar's operations depend on real-time API performance — from fleet availability checks to booking confirmations and partner integrations. Latency in the API layer translates directly to lost bookings. Meanwhile, legacy backend systems needed to be surfaced to external booking channels without compromising system stability.
What We Delivered
We engineered new APIs and systematically profiled and optimised existing API endpoints to eliminate latency bottlenecks. Legacy applications were integrated with the external API ecosystem using webMethods, and we provided ongoing DevOps services covering deployments, monitoring, incident response, and performance benchmarking.
Impact
Europcar achieved measurably faster API response times, reduced integration friction with third-party booking channels, and a more resilient backend capable of handling volume spikes during peak travel periods — directly supporting revenue and customer experience outcomes.
Challenge
The Mississippi Department of Human Services operated a large portfolio of Adabas, COBOL, and Natural legacy applications — built over decades — to administer benefits, child services, and social programs for millions of citizens. These systems needed to be accessible via modern web and mobile interfaces, without a "big bang" replacement that would put critical services at risk.
What We Delivered
We delivered a phased web and mobile enablement programme, exposing legacy application functionality through custom web interfaces while the core Adabas/Natural logic remained intact. Continuous functional improvements and performance optimisations were delivered on both on-premises infrastructure and mobile platforms, with webMethods serving as the integration backbone for DevOps and environment management.
Impact
Citizens and caseworkers gained modern, accessible interfaces to government services — reducing processing times, improving data accuracy, and extending the productive life of the agency's core systems by years. The state avoided costly and high-risk wholesale replacement of its legacy portfolio.
Challenge
The Metal Industries Benefit Funds Administrators manages retirement and benefit funds for workers across South Africa’s metal industry. However, their legacy systems — though stable — could not support the flexibility, scalability, or digital accessibility required by modern fund administration and regulatory reporting demands. Therefore, a cloud migration path was needed to ensure compliance, improve efficiency, and unlock future growth.
What We Delivered
mWtech modernised MIBFA's legacy environment using webMethods as the integration platform, while building new web applications and APIs deployed on Microsoft Azure. This created a hybrid architecture: legacy data and business logic preserved on-premises, with cloud-native APIs and applications extending the system's reach to member portals, employer channels, and regulatory interfaces.
Impact
MIBFA gained a modern, scalable cloud presence without wholesale replacement of proven legacy systems. Fund administrators, employers, and members gained digital access to services. Azure provided the elastic infrastructure needed for reporting periods and legislative submission deadlines.
